Bluecoat is a one form entry primary school for children aged 3-11, located in a socially deprived area of a town in Lincolnshire. I joined the school in September 2019 as PE co-ordinator and for numerous years before this PE had been taught exclusively by outside coaches. This had resulted in low staff confidence around teaching P.E. as well as lack of knowledge around the National Curriculum.
I didn’t like our old scheme of work. The plans were not easy to follow and the sports offered through which to teach the skills were not exciting. I wanted a more rigorous approach to assessment and a way to track certain pupil groups more easily. I had also been set the task of creating a PE progression document for teachers to work from for the next academic year, identifying an assessment system we could use for PE and increasing children’s development in the subject. Get Set 4 PE provided me with all of this and so much more.
The school partners with Inspire + a local sports charity who made me aware of the Get Set 4 PE platform. After a trial, all staff found the lessons to be of high quality and presented in a way which made quality delivery simple. We found the value for money to be good in relation to comparable products on the market. The range of lessons available through the platform was impressive and there was clear progression through the year groups. I particularly liked that there was a skills based focus in EYFS/KS1 progressing through to sports based application in KS2. A big selling point for us as a school was the holistic approach to PE with their ‘S.E.T’ (Social, Emotional and Thinking) skills embedded throughout all lessons.
Staff quotes from a staff voice after Get Set 4 PE was introduced:
“Really, really enjoying it. Easy to follow, equipment list makes it easy to prepare, lessons easy to follow. I’ve followed a couple of PE schemes in previous schools and this one is by far the clearest. Progression is very clear and obvious! Really enjoy teaching PE currently.”
“I really like the Get Set 4 PE platform. Firstly, it’s so easy to use and the website is very easy to navigate. Secondly, each lesson is set out with clear progression. I’ve just completed cricket lesson 2, and the activities progressed logically and the children have really enjoyed them. Thirdly, there are very simple ways to differentiate and they’re all suggested for you. Therefore, there is the option to adapt things should you need to e.g. change an activity depending on whether progress is/isn’t being made by certain individuals. Finally, the assessment tool is straight forward and very simple again. After feeling a bit worried about teaching PE this year, I’ve actually really enjoyed it and so have the children!”
Get Set 4 PE had has a transformative impact on our school, both in terms of attitudes and quality of provision.
Observing PE lessons since Get Set 4 PE was introduced has been a pleasure. Children are motivated and engaged. Our school SENDCO has commented on the improvement in engagement for SEND pupils which was a real challenge previously. The recent introduction of non-participant cards has supported this. Staff are enjoying teaching PE and are more aware of the sequencing of skills to allow for progress. We follow the STEP principle for differentiating activities which ensures all lessons are inclusive.
